Chapter 1: Dreams
Buffy thrashed around in her bed, the nightmare coursing through her mind making her cry out in fear and pain. Flashes of pyramids, of demons who took humans as hosts, of cultists in funky armour passed through her mind. Then Buffy saw her, a slayer leading an army, a host of humans against the cultists, screaming ‘false gods’ for all to hear. The humans behind her taking up the chant, as demons, even vampires joined the slayer in pushing this vile creature and his followers off their world.
Then the scene changed, it felt newer somehow, like there was less age to what she saw. A massive black man bearing the seal of Apothis pointing a staff of some kind at humans cowering below him, an older man in fatigues shouting
“I can save these people, help me!”
Pleading, “Help Me”
“Many have said that” the black man says, turning and firing at his fellow warriors of Apothis “But you are the first I believe could do it!”
Flash, a mountain, a tunnel leading deep within, Cheyenne Mountain Complex in raised letters over the entrance, soldiers patrolling and guarding.
Flash, the black man back again, calling her ‘Tarithna’ Slayer,
Flash, the first slayer, “you are needed, Tarithna”
Flash, the tunnel entrance again, zooming in on the words ‘Cheyenne Mountain Complex’
Buffy awake with a start, breathing quickly, “Okay” she muttered, “I can take a hint”
“Well,” Giles commented dryly, “these dreams certainly seem prophetic”
“Gee whiz,” Buffy replied sarcastically, “how did I not figure that out for myself?”
“Well, quite,” The oldest Slayer grinned, she didn’t need to be able to see her mentor to know he was almost certainly cleaning his glasses at the other end of the phone-line, “and they are unusually direct for the Powers That Be too”
She snorted wryly, “You noticed? So, what do we do?”
“Well,” he replied calmly, “you’ve certainly provided enough information to research these… unknowns, there should certainly be something if they are, as you said, based upon ancient Egypt. I certainly remember there being something off about the Gods of Ancient Egypt but you’re suggesting that they are technology users which rules out the sheer bulk of the demonic population”
“Technology was the feel I got, not magic,”
“Well, I trust your perception in this of course, but you do realise what this means of course”
Buffy grinned, “Yep, the first person to tell Andrew what’s going on gets sewer duty for a month”
There was a snort from the other end of the line, “quite”
Buffy stilled, gazing around the room with wariness in her eyes, “you know what this means though”
There was an expectant pause on the other end of the line.
“The Military,”
“Yes,” Giles answered, the frown in his voice coming clear down the line, “what do you suggest?”
“I can’t ignore the dream,” Buffy replied slowly, “but given our past experiences with the military…”
“Do you want us to come?” her watcher calmly asked.
“Yes,” she replied, nodding although she knew the older man could not see it, “I go in alone at first, try to make peaceful contact but if this goes to hell I want back-up I trust nearby”
The Slayer laughed grimly, “If the dream is true, then I may just need your reinforcement anyway”
“I understand,” Buffy smiled gratefully at his response, “We’re coming Buffy”
Chapter 2: Colorado
Buffy stopped her rental car just short of the mountain, gazing at the entrance; it was exactly as she remembered it from her dream, except, she thought with a wry grin, for the guards who were taking a very active interest in her presence.
She rolled down her window as a blonde-haired female approached her car, a patch on her uniform identifying her as Staff Sergeant O’Malley,
“I’m sorry miss, you can’t park here” she calmly told the Slayer, who didn’t miss the alertness in the soldiers eyes, how close her fingers were to her rifles safety nor the carefully hidden turrets and gun emplacements that dotted the area.
Buffy looked up to the sergeant with a wary but wry smile, “Do you have a” she thought back to her dream, concentrating hard for a moment, “Teal’c working here? Tall black guy, funky gold tattoo on his forehead?”
O’Malley stiffened subtly, “I’m afraid I don’t know the name Sir, but if you come to the guardroom I could check for you”
“Sure” Buffy said, glancing around at all the guns that were suddenly not quite pointing at her, “and while you’re having me checked out, you can pass a message along to that person who may not work here…”
The look O’Malley sent her could best be described as ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about’
The airman walked quickly into the cafeteria, gazing unnoticed around the room before he spotted SG-1 or rather the unmistakable form of Teal’c. Relived that he didn’t have to search any further, he strode swiftly across to the group.
“Excuse me”
“Yes Airman” Colonel O’Neill replied groaned, putting down his spoonful of Jelly, cursing whatever beings might be listening that once again, a simple meal with his friends looked about to be interrupted by business.
“Message for Teal’c sir”
Teal’c raised an eyebrow in surprise; it wasn’t often that an airman came looking for him; usually it was O’Neill, Major Carter, or Daniel Jackson, the other members of SG-1.
“The guards are holding a young lady up top; she refuses to identify herself, but insists on a message being brought down to you Sir”
“Secret admirer Teal’c?”
Teal’c ignored the comment and raised the other eyebrow, every female on planet he knew was either known to the guards, or a member of the SGC.
“The message is, ‘the Tarithna is at the gate’ sir”
Teal’c nodded almost complacently, then blinked, his eyes widening slightly.
Seeing the subtle signs of pure shook from their friend, his team-mates tensed, preparing for action but Teal’c was already out of the door.
O’Neill glanced at Teal’c chair as it bounced off the floor in shock, “Did Teal’c just flat out run out of the room?”
“Err, yeah” Daniel replied, brushing the remains of Teal’c dinner off of his fatigues.
“Did he look… shocked to you?”
“Very” Carter answered, glancing at her CO. The communication was silent, no words were needed and with a clatter of chairs hitting the floor, the rest of SG-1 ran after their comrade.
